Compared to other nations worldwide, the United States wastes energy the most. And with all the problems our planet is facing these days with pollution and the depletion of our ozone layer, we need to help economize electricity, which in turn will assist Earth.
We will concentrate on several things that each of us can do to conserve electricity and save money at the same time. These are extremely simple things that any person can do, we simply need to make the choice to do them in order to help planet Earth and ourselves.
Simply switching off the lights every time you go out of a room in your house is one of the simplest things you can do to avoid wasting electrical energy. Many people will go out of a room for 10 to 15 minutes to go to the kitchen to prepare food or to do something else and they leave the light turned on in the room they left because they will be coming back in to the room shortly. Leaving the room unattended with the lights turned on can lead to as much as thirty minutes or more of squandered electricity if done a couple of times a day. While 30 minutes doesn't seem like much, don't forget that millions upon millions of people do this daily. And each person who does this is squandering 182 hours of energy a year for merely this one light. Let's imagine we consume roughly 182 hours of electricity yearly and we multiply that by one million people. That totals to 182,000,000 hours of electricity being consumed yearly on only one light.
Another thing that is causing electricity to be wasted is the habit people have of going in a room and switching the lights on. This has become something that's done by a lot of people. I know I am guilty of this quite frequently. Nonetheless, there could be enough light, maybe sunlight, coming into a room. You are going to nevertheless walk in and turn the light on. And aside from that, because of the natural light getting in, we tend to forget we switched the room light on in the first place and leave it on for the rest of the day. You must make a conscious effort to leave the lights off if there is enough natural light in a room.
Another issue is people leaving electronic devices like TVs and radios on the whole day, even when they are not using them. When I visit my mother, I have to remind her to switch the television off since she would leave it running even though she's not watching. That's a good deal of electrical energy being wasted. Therefore, if you are not watching the television, simply flip it off.
These are just several simple things that can be done daily to help save electrical power and to help save the planet by doing so. It doesn't take much to do what we explained but if everyone does it, no matter how little it may seem, it will have a huge positive consequence.
